Ceintuur Theater

Restaurant Ceintuur Theater is a hospitality interior design project in Amsterdam by Studio Elèn Letort. Set within a former cinema dating back to 1921, the design draws on the spatial language of the early twentieth century, translating geometric lines, rounded forms and monumental proportions into a calm and contemporary restaurant interior. Rather than recreating the past, the space was shaped with careful respect for the building’s original character. Proportion plays a central role throughout the design. The generous height and volume of the former cinema remain present, while carefully balanced interventions create moments of intimacy and comfort. Soft curtains introduce rhythm, depth and improved acoustics, gently shaping the space without compromising its openness. Two bars define the restaurant’s spatial experience. The main bar forms a natural focal point, finished in honey-toned wood and topped with a marble surface with an almost fluid appearance. It is framed by a bespoke stained-glass composition, inspired by the original windows still present in the building and reinterpreted in a contemporary way. Upstairs, the cocktail bar introduces a stronger graphic gesture through striped surfaces, bold lines and layered lighting, adding contrast while remaining in dialogue with the rest of the interior. The result is a warm and quietly expressive interior where history and contemporary hospitality meet naturally.
